Wine Trail Wilderness Named One of the Top Vineyard Camping Experiences in the US by Hipcamp

Wine Trail Wilderness Camp

The Southernmost Illinois Tourism Bureau is happy to announce that Wine Trail Wilderness, a hand built camping retreat in the heart of Southern Illinois wine country, has been named one of the Top Vineyard Camping Experiences in the United States by Hipcamp, the world’s #1 camping app.

Located directly on the Shawnee Hills Wine Trail, the 37-acre property offers campers easy access to some of Illinois’ most beloved wineries and hiking experiences. While not a vineyard itself, Wine Trail Wilderness is within easy strolling distance of both Pomona Winery — known for its acclaimed fruit wines and treehouse-like deck—and Hickory Ridge Winery, home of the award-winning Eclipse Port and the Governor’s Cup-winning Norton. Guests are encouraged to wander over, bring picnic lunches, and spend time relaxing and enjoying the beautiful views.

Set amid the forests and hills of the Shawnee National Forest, the campground is the passion project of Jon Womack, a retired Spanish teacher and self-taught builder. Campsites are spread out across the property, some set beside wildflowers, others near newly planted trees that will soon grow into shady groves, while some of Jon’s best-loved projects include the upcycled GrainZebo (a former grain bin turned social hub), a bocce ball court, and a characterful new outhouse he is currently building using the frame of an old truck.

“I’m thrilled our place has been listed as one of the top winery experiences in the US,” said Womack. “We’ve loved welcoming guests from all over the country since 2017. Most come for the wine trail, but they stay for the peace, the hiking, the wildflowers — and the chance to unplug.”

Guests agree. “Wine, music, food, peace and quiet, hiking, amazing views, and bright stars shining! We’ll be back,” wrote one recent camper on hipcamp.com. Another added, “Third time staying — and the best yet!”

With multiple hiking trails on and around the property, nearby access to Little Grand Canyon, and spring dogwoods and fall foliage that draw visitors year after year, Wine Trail Wilderness has become a beloved local getaway. “My kids are already asking when we can go back,” shared one guest. “We’ve already decided to bring friends next year,” said another.

Hipcamp’s Top Vineyard & Winery Camping Experiences celebrates private landowners across the U.S. who offer unforgettable outdoor stays on or near wine-producing land. Wine Trail Wilderness was selected for its location, guest experience, creativity, and consistent positive reviews.
